Christian Dior

A book about the fashion icon Dior.

Dior as designer, collector and art dealer - a panoramic view into the world of the legendary designer. This volume contains approximately 120 haute couture designs by Christian Dior from the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the House of Dior - including archival prototypes of bespoke garments – displayed alongside fashion photography, film stills, vintage perfumes, cosmetics and original sketches, Dior furniture and other decorative pieces that demonstrate the designer's passion for collecting and his time as an art dealer, the objects reproduced here offer an insight into Dior's life and character, as well as his haute couture creations since 1947, always embodying modern elegance.

Christian Dior was born in Granville, a seaside town on the coast of Normandy, France, in 1904. While his family hoped he would become a diplomat, Dior preferred art. His preternatural talent led to him being hired by Robert Piquet in 1937 and subsequently working alongside Pierre Balmain and Lucien Lelong. Dior was an instant sensation after World War II. His designs, which promoted femininity, were the antithesis of the unisex clothing of wartime Europe and came to symbolize the "New Look". Since his untimely death in 1957, an extraordinary succession of creative directors has given the iconic brand its own style.
