Rückl
The Rückl family of glassmakers came to Bohemia at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. They built several glassworks, the one in Nizbor, which we know today, was built by Antonín Rückl on a green meadow in 1903.
The glassworks enjoyed a period of prosperity during the years between the world wars, with thousands of employees, warehouses in the capital and representation all over the world. After 1945, due to President Benes' nationalisation decree, a cloud fell over the family business. Cut glass was labelled as a relic of the bourgeoisie and production focused on simple glass for the medical sector. 1989 brought renewed excitement about the possibility of regaining the factory, but unfortunately the restitution was rejected. There was no choice but to buy the factory from the state. Since 1992 the glassworks has been in the hands of the Rückl family again. 2017 takes the glassworks even further, with the entry of investor and patron of Czech brands Martin Wichterle, the Rückl brand enters another era. Under the leadership of artistic director Rony Plesl, it pays tribute to the tradition of Czech glassmaking and modern design.
The current artistic director Kateřina Handlová continues the long tradition, but moves the brand more towards female icons and introduces the Heroine collection inspired by prominent women from around the world.
